N. 61 - Critical Phenomenology Dossier

2026-03-15

The call for papers is now open for issue 61 of the journal O que nos faz pensar, published by the Department of Philosophy at PUC-Rio, a special issue titled “Critical Phenomenology Dossier.”

The dossier will be edited by Fernanda Alt (PUC-Rio) and Silvana de Souza Ramos (USP).

Abstract: The field of phenomenology, one of the most significant currents in contemporary philosophy, has undergone substantial revisions over the past four decades, particularly in the Anglo-Saxon context. This theoretical reconfiguration has expanded analyses of themes central to the classical phenomenological tradition—such as corporeality, perception, imagination, and intersubjectivity—by articulating them with increasingly situated critical perspectives. This strand, which has taken shape under the banner of critical phenomenology, constitutes a fertile theoretical-political field for investigating social oppressions in the capitalist context engendered by processes of racialization, genderization, the normalization of sexualities, ableism, and class oppression in their intrinsic relations with coloniality. Without compromising methodological rigor, critical phenomenology rejects the idea of a subjectivity purified of historical and contingent aspects, seeking, through interdisciplinary dialogue, the practical transformation of the oppressions that constitute the world lived individually and collectively. This dossier is part of the effort to broaden and diversify this debate in the Brazilian context, where such studies are still in their early stages. We invite everyone researching these themes to submit their contributions.

The journal O que nos faz pensar has been rated Qualis A1 in the new CAPES classification.

The deadline for submissions is September 30, 2026.

Issue 61 is scheduled for publication in August 2027.

[EXTENDED] N. 60 - Philosophy and drama in antiquity: the tragic, the comic and the philosophical

2026-02-11

[EXTENDED] N. 59 - The essay on the frontiers of philosophy

2025-11-19

Submissions are now open for issue 59 of the journal O que nos faz pensar, published by the Philosophy Department at PUC-Rio, in a special issue entitled “The essay at the frontiers of philosophy.”

The dossier will be organized by Manuela Fantinato (UNIRIO) and Tomaz de Tassis (PUC-Rio).

Summary of the proposal: At the beginning of his famous “Essay as Form,” Theodor Adorno argues that the academic community only tolerates as philosophy that which is clothed in the dignity of the universal, and that it is only concerned with a particular work when it can be used to exemplify universal categories. Essay writing, on the contrary, rejects the rules of science, distancing itself from absolute ideas and eternalizing the transitory by elevating experience to the status of knowledge. Its rebellious and anti-systematic nature links it to modern freedom of spirit, while the affirmation of its material nature as writing brings it closer to literature. From the essayistic prose of Sérgio Buarque de Holanda or Octavio Paz to the critical and aesthetic considerations of Georg Lukacs, Walter Benjamin, or Max Bense, the essay opens paths to multiple forms of knowledge, configuring itself as a comprehensive way of dialoguing with social, cultural, and spiritual reality, allowing the exploration of boundaries between philosophy and other human sciences in an exercise that is both poetic and hermeneutic. We invite researchers to focus on the essay as a formal expression and “way of life,” emphasizing its importance for the constitution of reflections on contemporary philosophy and, particularly, Latin American humanities.

The journal O que nos faz pensar is rated Qualis A1 in the new CAPES classification.

The deadline for submissions has been extended to May 23, 2026.

Issue 59 is scheduled for publication in December 2026.

[ENDED] N. 58 - On imagination: between ethics, aesthetics and politics

2025-07-18

Article submissions are now open for issue 58 of the journal O que nos faz pensar, from the Philosophy department at PUC-Rio, in a special issue entitled ‘On imagination: between ethics, aesthetics and politics’.

The dossier will be organised by Roan Costa Cordeiro (PUC-Rio), Cassiana Lopes Stephan (UFRJ) and Benjamim Brum Neto (UFRJ).

Summary of the proposal: We invite researchers to contribute to the dossier “On the imagination: between ethics, aesthetics and politics”, proposing investigations that question and expand the meanings of the imagination in its philosophical implications. We are interested in reflecting on the multiple modulations of the faculty of imagining, understanding it not only as a mental operation or aesthetic power, but as a productive force involved in practices of invention and intervention, the creation of worlds and the opening up of the possible. In this dossier, the idea is to think of imagination as a symbolic, ethical and political operator, capable of establishing forms of sensitivity, subjectivation and resistance. Thus, we expect contributions that explore both the devices that configure, capture or guide the imagination and those that mobilize it in new confabulations, thought experiments or critical practices.

The journal O que nos faz pensar is rated Qualis A3 in the new CAPES classification.

The deadline for submissions is 10 October.

The publication of issue 58 is scheduled for March 26.

[ENDED] N. 57 - Beyond Dualism: Configurations of the Body in Modernity

2025-07-03

Article submissions are now open for issue 57 of the journal O que nos faz pensar, published by the Philosophy department at PUC-Rio, in a special issue entitled “Beyond Dualism: Configurations of the Body in Modernity”.

The dossier will be organized by Clara Castro (PUC-Rio) and Pedro Galé (UFSCar).

Summary of the proposal: The idea that the modern period was founded by Descartes outside the uncertainties of material bodies, empirical sciences or tradition, is a commonplace in the History of Philosophy. The purpose of this dossier is to deconstruct this cliché, exposing a variety of modern philosophies interested in the experiences of bodies, as well as the sciences and arts that were produced from them. Focusing philosophical reflection on the body means, on the one hand, giving up dualism and, on the other, dealing with empiricism and its difficulties, such as the limitation of the five human senses. It also means bringing to philosophy a pleasure that is immanent to the flesh, but which can only be explained or intensified through the extrapolations of the imagination. At the opposite end of the spectrum from pure intellection, this dossier wants to show that metaphysics is also made of the body, in the body and for the body.
