Abstract

This interview is about the reception of Hannah Arendt's work in Brazil and the development of her critical fortune. Using oral history methodology with a semi-structured script, we interviewed PhD. Celso Lafer, Arendt's only Brazilian former student. Lafer was the main protagonist in the process of translating Arendt's books in the 1970s and 1980s. The thinker collaborated with significant texts to expand Arendt's critical fortune in Brazil in all fields of knowledge. Our aim was to collect information, transcribe it and make it available to the entire network of arendtian researchers. In this way, we see the interview as creating an unprecedented historical source on the subject.

Author Biographies

Marion Brepohl, Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR)

Full Professor at the Federal University of Paraná, she holds a bachelor's degree in History from the Federal University of Paraná (1980), a bachelor's degree in Social Communication from the Federal University of Paraná (1980), a master's degree in History from the Federal University of Paraná (1982), and a doctorate in History from the State University of Campinas (1993). She completed postdoctoral studies at the University of Paris I (Sorbonne) and the Free University of Berlin. Since 2016, she has coordinated the Human Rights and Memory Policies Group (DIHPOM). She has experience in the field of History, with an emphasis on Political History, working mainly on the following topics: political behavior, dictatorship, Nazism, imperialism, and racism. Her studies focus on the role of feelings, collective sensibilities, and intellectual sensitivity as ethical moments of decisive importance in the actions of subjects (collective and individual) in the public sphere. The researcher is also an avid scholar of the work of Hannah Arendt.

Jaciel Rossa Valente, Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR)

Bachelor's degree in History from the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná (2020). Beneficiary of the ProUni program (2017-2020). Developed two Scientific Initiation Projects, respectively between 2017-2018 and 2019-2020, based on the work of Hannah Arendt. Laureate of the Marcelino Champagnat Award (2021). Master's degree in History from the Federal University of Paraná (2023). PhD candidate in History at the Federal University of Paraná. Member of the Human Rights and Memory Policies Network (DIHPOM). Experience in the legislative sector. Research topics: Hannah Arendt, history of historiography, political passions, intersubjectivity, memory, and memory policies.

Roseli Boschilia, Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR)

Graduated in History from the Federal University of Paraná (1981), Master's degree in History from the Federal University of Paraná (1996), PhD in History from the Federal University of Paraná (2002) and postdoctoral studies at the University of Porto (2012) and the Open University of Lisbon (2017), with a scholarship from CAPES. Associate professor in the undergraduate and graduate programs in History at the Federal University of Paraná and the Center for the Study of Migration and Intercultural Relations (CEMRI) at the Open University of Portugal (UAb). She has experience in the field of Oral History, working mainly on topics related to migratory movements, vulnerable subjects, memory, and autobiography. Among her most recent publications are several book chapters published abroad, such as: Young travelers: reflections on the displacement of minors from northern Portugal to Brazil in the 19th century (Porto, 2014); Memory and subjectivity: the fortunes and misfortunes of a Portuguese immigrant (Lisbon, 2014) and Portuguese immigrant women under the veil of invisibility: a historiographical assessment (Venice, 2017); “The Salazar dictatorship and the experience of exile in the autobiographical memoirs of writer Alexandre Cabral (2019); ”Between the counter and the books: autobiographical narrative of an apprentice clerk“ (2019); ”When emigration is necessary: autobiographical narratives on the Haitian diaspora" (2019); "A difficult story to tell: the experience of forced displacement and the dilemmas of memory and forgetting (2021). When not everything can be said: female autobiographical narratives and the prohibitions of memory (2023).
