Abstract

We propose that Socrates is a mythical element. To this end, the article presents itself as a survey of the character's traits, mainly as it appears in the Platonic dialogues, and the comparison of these traits both with characters consensually defined as mythical and with a certain way of conceptualize the term myth. The objective of such survey and comparison is to strengthen both our proposition, from which the consequences for the studies of the socratic dialogs of Plato must still be evaluated, and an opening of such texts to encounters beyond those restricted to a certain traditional field of philosophy.

Erick Araujo, Universidade Federal de Brasília (UNB)

Bachelor's degree in Education from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ, 2007). Master's degree (ENSP, 2012) and doctorate (UFF, 2016) from the graduate program in Bioethics, Applied Ethics, and Public Health. Doctorate from the graduate program in Metaphysics (UNB, 2023). He is a fellow of the Senior Postdoctoral Program (PDS) at FAPERJ.

Gabriele Cornelli, Universidade Federal de Brasília (UNB)

He is Full Professor of Ancient Philosophy in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Brasília (UnB). He holds postdoctoral degrees in Ancient Philosophy from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), the Università degli Studi di Napoli, Federico II (Italy), and the University of Oxford (United Kingdom). He was a Beaufort Visiting Scholar at St. John's College and the Faculty of Classics at the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom) and a Visiting Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Sichuan University (Chengdu, China). He was Director of the International Center for Bioethics and Humanities and Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Bioethics at the University of Brasília (2011-24). He was coordinator of the Graduate Program in Metaphysics and the Graduate Program in Philosophy at the same university, as well as the Center for Classical Studies (NEC). He was coordinator of the ANPOF Working Group on Plato and Platonism (2008-14). He is editor of Archai magazine (www.archai.unb.br/revista), Atlantís magazine (www.impactum.uc.pt), and Plato Journal (www.platosociety.org). He directs the UNESCO Archai Chair: the plural origins of Western thought (www.archai.unb.br). He is editor of the Archai collection (Annablume/University of Coimbra Press), the Cátedra collection (Paulus), the Filosofia e Tradição collection (UNESCO Brazil), and the prestigious Brill's Plato Studies Series (Brill).
