Abstract
The review examines the recent Brazilian edition of Plato’s Phaedo or On the Soul, translated, introduced, and annotated by Gabriele Cornelli (Penguin–Companhia das Letras, 2025). It analyzes both the formal aspects of the volume—such as the quality of the translation, the clarity of the Portuguese, the critical apparatus, and the editorial organization—and its main interpretive axes. Particular attention is given to the effort to balance conceptual precision with readability, as well as to the didactic function of the introduction and notes, aimed at both academic readers and non-specialists. The review also notes the limitations inherent in a commented translation, including specific interpretive choices, the extent of the critical apparatus, and the more direct engagement with the Brazilian academic context. Overall, the volume is presented as a solid and accessible edition, well suited for academic use and for the contemporary circulation of Plato’s dialogue.
