Abstract

This article aims to contribute to the study of the reception of Friedrich Nietzsche in the work of Gilberto Freyre, especially in his interpretation of Brazilian culture and society, by comparing Freyre's texts with the books by and about Nietzsche preserved in his personal library, maintained by the Gilberto Freyre Foundation, in the neighborhood of Apipucos, in Recife. It explores the understanding of Nietzsche's concept of perspectivism as a process of identification that, on the one hand, encourages Freyre to question prevailing evolutionary, deterministic, and racialist theories, but on the other, justifies the use and abuse of Nietzsche. To this end, it considers the intermediation of Henry L. Mencken's interpretation in Freyre's reading of Nietzsche.

Author Biography

Tiago Hermano Breunig, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE)

Adjunct Professor in the Department of Languages and Literature at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) and in the Graduate Program in Languages and Literature at UFPE. He holds a bachelor's degree (2005) and a teaching degree (2007) in Languages and Literature, with a specialization in Portuguese Language and Portuguese Language Literature, from the Federal University of Santa Catarina. Master's degree (2008) in Literature from the Graduate Program in Literature at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, with support from CAPES, and Doctorate (2015) with support from CNPq, with a sandwich period at Yale University, under the guidance of Prof. Kenneth David Jackson, through the CAPES Sandwich Doctorate program. He is currently conducting postdoctoral research at Tulane University, under the supervision of Prof. Idelber Avelar, with funding from CNPq.
